Modern Tuscan-Style Home Interior Design: Out With The Old World Décor

Tuscan Design Meets Contemporary

Tuscan architecture is a classic interior design that’s reminiscent of Old World Europe. With its origins in Tuscany, Italy, Tuscan architectural design is a rustic style that draws on the traditions of a picturesque Italian villa and the scenery to match.

But although beautiful, more and more interior designers are straying away from traditional Tuscan design and are instead finding ways to add more contemporary interior design elements to this classic style. Because Tuscan-style architectural design doesn’t rest in a single design element, you can use some of its best modern features to give your home a refresh.

A Timeless Exterior with Architectural Design

Tuscan architectural design on the exterior of a home typically features an open plan with an Old World design. While some elements of Tuscan design are outdated, you can never go wrong with a contemporary exterior space that opens up the home.

Traditional Tuscan exterior design often includes terracotta or tile roofs. To take advantage of this beautiful tile work, change the stucco around the house to a light color, like eggshell white. In addition, the style is known for its scrollwork and intricate patterns. Instead, simplify these patterns so they add a contemporary touch.

In traditional Tuscan-style homes, doors and windows are rectangular with elongated arches, bordered by stucco or wood beams. These beautiful doorways can be transformed into a contemporary style with a fresh, light coat of paint and new windows. Look for big, beautiful windows to complement the darker tones of Tuscan design. Ditch the traditional mustard Stucco pillars and opt for stonework instead.

A Fresh Interior Design With Tuscan Architecture

Tuscan interior design usually features sturdy materials that have a rustic tone and warm appeal. With this color scheme, it’s important to add some light, contemporary colors to balance them out. Bright blues and greens beautifully accent the browns and golds that are popular in traditional Tuscan styles.

While paneled or vaulted ceilings are a typical choice and are richly textured, swap these out for sweeping ceilings that have a smooth finish. That way, you can still enjoy the space that these vaulted designs create without feeling stifled by the dated designs. Bleach the traditional wooden or chestnut beams to completely transform the space and make it more contemporary.

In a traditional Tuscan-style home design, the floor is often terracotta, stone, travertine, or antique. Keep this spirit alive with fresh tiles in a clean grey or white color. Or, choose tilework that features a unique pattern to add your own personality to your Tuscan-contemporary home. This luxury interior design is a great example of high-quality minimalism that balances rustic and sophisticated elements to create a space that is magnificent.

Accents to Update Tuscan Décor

Wrought iron was a key accessory/accent element in Tuscan-style design, but it’s now outdated. Instead, add contemporary metal accents throughout the house to balance the warm tones of this rustic style. To add brightness to a Tuscan-style room, add a pop of color in with artwork or furnishings. For example, add abstract art pieces or bright-colored furniture to liven up an old-world interior design.

When done correctly, Tuscan architectural design can be classic and contemporary. By combining warm and cool elements, you can create a relaxed, elegant, romantic, and luxurious space. Stucco, stone, and terracotta brick are primary elements in Tuscan masonry, while light paint colors, fixtures, and decor can mix it up and really transform your space.
